jon’s story

As a Creative Director with a foundation in motion and design, Jon Sontag specializes in brand development, art direction, visual design, film production, animation, and photography. He loves tinkering with tools to amplify creativity and solving problems to connect strategy and technology for unexpected and powerful experiences.

Currently serving as an Associate Creative Director at Code and Theory, formerly YML, Jon leads pitches, builds brands, and manages multidisciplinary teams specializing in design, video, animation, photography, and 3D. In addition to his professional work, he co-hosts the podcast, Monsters of Design, and runs a YouTube channel, The Curious Hunter, dedicated to his passion for hunting, fishing, and cooking up the food he harvests.

Jon's journey began in childhood, making superhero and adventure movies in the backyard and skate videos with friends. Early editing experiments with a digital camcorder, VCR, and boombox ignited his love for storytelling. A high school darkroom photography class cemented his passion for light, color, and composition, while also introducing him to Photoshop, opening a door to a new creative horizon through graphic design.

Right after high school, Jon hit the road with his band, building a freelance design career on his laptop in the back of their tour van. He created logos, websites, marketing material, and continued to tinker with video as computers became better and better at handling editing workflows.

After building a career in design and branding, the rise of DSLR cameras eventually led to a rediscovery of photography and video. This pivot inspired the launch of Conjure Pictures, Jon’s independent content studio, giving him a chance to focus on the work he loves in order to grow his unique and wide set of creative capabilities.

Though he still directs and produces personal projects like music videos and documentaries, Jon's primary focus is on building and scaling the content studio at Code and Theory. Inspired by the 1978 Superman film, his ultimate dream is to one day write and direct a Superman movie.
